A man has been hospitalised after suffering a stab wound by falling onto a knife in the New England.

The 65-year-old man reportedly tripped and fell onto a knife at a house at Shirley Street, Inverell, on Friday night or Saturday morning, a NSW Ambulance spokesperson said.
NSW Ambulance were called to the scene at about 10.10 am on Saturday.
He was treated for a stab wound to his left side just below a rib, the NSW Ambulance spokesperson said.

The ambulance transported him to Inverell Hospital where they met the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, who took him to Tamworth hospital.
The patient was stabilised by the Helicopter Critical Care Medical Team prior to being airlifted to Tamworth.
He was in a serious but stable condition.
