Dylan Fisher appeared in Tamworth Local Court via video link from custody, and his defence solicitor Rasha Shammas also dialled in virtually.
The court heard the state prosecuting authority, the DPP, would proceed with the single charge of wounding with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
Ms Shammas told the court lawyers would meet to discuss issues in the case early next month.
Magistrate Julie Soars adjourned the matter to October.

She told Fisher she would endorse a warrant for him to access specific medical attention while behind bars.
"Alright, thank you," he replied.
The accused has been bail refused since he was arrested and charged in February, and made no application for his release on Wednesday.
Fisher has not yet entered a plea.
Fisher, who is in his 20s, is accused of stabbing a 41-year-old man after an alleged confrontation of Goonoo Goonoo Road in the early hours of February 20.
The older man was found with wounds to his torso at a nearby petrol station, and was rushed to hospital.
Fisher was arrested a short time later. Police allege the pair knew each other.
The case has been plagued by delays.
