Corey James Hall, 26, fronted Tamworth Local Court with defence solicitor Garry Johnston earlier this week, after pleading guilty to a common assault charge in what was described as a "very unusual" case.
The Oztag player was handed a 12-month good behaviour order, or conditional release order, but no criminal conviction after Mr Johnston asked magistrate Julie Soars to give the offender a "stern talking to".
Hall was charged with common assault after an Oztag player on an opposing team reported him to police the morning after a Wednesday night match in Tamworth earlier this year.
"It's a very unusual case Your Honour, but I've looked at it very closely," Mr Johnston said during the sentencing hearing.
"Normally what happens on the field stays on the field."

Mr Johnston said there was implied consent for people who signed up to play contact sports, but accepted his client had "technically" broken the law when he pushed the opposing player in the shoulders while the ball was being played.
Ms Soars told Hall to find ways to "manage excess enthusiasm" on the field, because it could be seen as aggression.
"Obviously the person involved thought it was ... malicious even," she said.
She added that it was a "wake up call" that people can "complain to the police".
Police facts reveal Hall 'tagged' the victim about 10 minutes into an Oztag game on February 17.
As the ball was being played, the offender made an advance towards the ball, and the referee called him out as being offside.
Hall stood next to the victim and a short time later, Hall used both his hands to push her in the shoulders.
She stumbled backwards but didn't fall, the facts said.
The referee ordered Hall to leave the Oztag field, and he waited in the carpark for the rest of the game before leaving.
Tamworth police noted the victim didn't appear to have visible injuries.
