Turf has been dug up at several of the riverside soccer fields on Carter Street, that appear to be the result of a hoon doing donuts on the grass.
It is believed the first incident occurred on Friday night before vandals returned to do more damage on Sunday.
Tamworth Regional Council sports and recreation operations manager Anton Logan said it was a very annoying situation to deal with.
"It's incredibly frustrating given our growing climate and how difficult it is to get grass to grow at this time of the year," he said.
"Damage like this is repairable at some point, but it's going to cost the community a lot of money and it's going to take a lot of time, it's not something we can get back in a couple of weeks."

He said it was difficult to put an exact price on the cost of repairs just yet, but expects it will end up in the thousands.
Luckily at this stage council does not believe the damage will impact the ability for teams to use the fields, as much of it is on the sidelines.
It caps off what has been a frustrating season for many local clubs, which have had games moved or cancelled due to wet weather.
"I would say we've had a wetter than usual winter, and our guys have been working extremely hard juggling fields, moving teams to make sure weekend sport can go ahead in some way, shape or form," Mr Logan said.
"And this [the vandalism] just makes life even more complicated."
