I was saddened to learn of the recent death of a former Mayor of Tamworth, Douglas Charles Campbell, aged 95. He served as an alderman for 18 years from 1953 and was mayor from 1957 to 1959. On behalf of my fellow Councillors and the community, I would like to extended our deepest sympathy to Mr Campbell's family and friends. He is a key figure in Tamworth's history who made a lasting contribution to our community through a number of significant achievements. He was our youngest mayor - elected at age 30 - and saw through some major projects and activities including the completion of Dungowan Dam and the creation of the Festival of Light. He also hosted a visit from Her Royal Highness Princess Alexandra of Kent in 1959. Mr Campbell gave his time to many local organisations and groups over the years. His many achievements are well documented in Tamworth Historical Society's 2015 publication, The Mayors of Tamworth 1876- 2010, which was written by well-known former local resident Del Brooke.

One of Council's long-running funding programs, the Heritage Assistance Fund, is now open for applications. Started in 1991, the annual program assists with the cost of conservation and restoration work on buildings of heritage significance in the Tamworth region. I'm sure you agree we are fortunate to have many business, public and residential buildings which add to the character of our community. The fund plays a part in ensuring our built heritage endures into the future. A total of $44,000 - funded by Council with the support of the NSW Government - is available this year. Grants are offered on a dollar-for-dollar basis. For more information and to apply, go to Council's website. www.tamworth.nsw.gov.au/Heritage-Assistance-Fund-application
