Oxley Police District officers at Gunnedah Police Station received care parcels from the Sutherland Shire's Care 4 Kids charity to help children who've suffered at the hands of family violence.

Inspector Michael Wurth said the care bags, which contain stickers, colouring in books, pencils, stamps and lollies are a positive in what can be a dark situation.

"It's a distraction for the kids so we can investigate the circumstance, but it also shows us in a light that's not so confrontational," he said.

"So if we visit situations numerous times, if the kids know the police are there with a care toy or something they can play with it's not always a negative thing - even if the situation is negative.

"It's fantastic ... children are often the victims in these situations and we shouldn't lose sight of that."

The charity sent two large parcels to Gunnedah Police Station to be distributed to children, as well as a number of snack packs and non-perishable foods that were given to Gunnedah Family Support to restock its emergency pantry.

Care 4 Kids was founded in 2016 to make care packs for children affected by domestic violence.
