The region received a major scare after it was revealed a confirmed COVID case had spent three days in town in early June, including at popular cafes and taverns, with some people and places having to go into lockdown.

Things are returning to normal though, much to the relief of Moree Plains Shire Council mayor Katrina Humphries who said it has been an incredibly testing fortnight.

"It makes you sick, the huge anguish and the simple expense of having something like this happen, it's very frustrating," she said.

She said it made her proud to see how the community responded, with huge testing numbers being recorded and great discipline being shown.

Between Thursday, 10 and Saturday 19 June just less than 2200 people were tested in Moree.

Cr Humphries said locals would and should continue to do whatever is necessary to prevent any outbreak in town.

"I'm not surprised because we've kept COVID out of Moree for 16 months and our community has been very diligent, our businesses have been very diligent," she said.

"And it all just goes to show if you have the correct policies and procedures in place and you do get an infection in your community, that if you're doing the right things you can get past it.

"So we just need to remain vigilant - keep up the QR code, keep up the sanitising, keep up the social distancing and just be cautious, and it's really hard but it's worth doing because we dodged a bullet."

With the current breakout in Sydney, she is also urging any members of the community that travel in between Moree and the city to get tested as soon as they return.
