About six months ago, two honour boards mysteriously landed in the hands of Manilla's Historical Society (MHS).
But none of the names look familiar and the local sports clubs haven't come forward to claim them, MHS president Jim Maxwell said.
"There's a couple of names that maybe rang a bell but most of them didn't, whether it's from one of the neighbouring villages or towns but we're not even sure what club it came from," he said.
"People have suggested golf or bowls, but we don't even know who's on the honour board.
"There's just no leads, if we knew who dropped them off we would know where they came from - we often get stuff people find out at the tip - years ago we got a big box of glass negatives and they were very early photos of the Manilla district.
"I think that happens when someone passes away in town and their family lives away, they clean up by taking things out to the tip and we lose history."
There's no telling just where the honour boards came from, but it's not the first time a piece of history from somewhere else has ended up in Manilla.
Mr Maxwell and his wife went on a road trip to Mudgee, Forbes and Orange last year to return items, including a book about Forbes' early history written in the 1890's.
"If it doesn't belong in Manilla we try to get it where it does belong," he said.
"We are hoping that someone will be able to pinpoint their origin by the family names.
"We would be pleased to be able to return them to their rightful town, as they have no value to us, but may be significant somewhere else".
