CANCER is a disease which has impacted residents and staff at Oaktree Retirement Village Tamworth in some way or another, and it's what they'll be raising funds for at an upcoming market day.

The market day is the second annual fundraiser village manager Rod Sawtell has planned, and all money raised will go to the North West Cancer Centre.
In particular, the funds will go towards the purchasing of a PET scanner. A PET scan helps reveal how tissues and organs are functioning.

Mr Sawtell said his father had just been diagnosed with cancer, and at the moment he needed to travel to Calvary Mater in Newcastle for a scan.
"I know they're very expensive but the benefit would be that we've got the oncology centre in Tamworth, so let's utilise it so locals don't have to travel hours," he said.
"My parents live in Boggabri so they don't live in Tamworth. To Newcastle, it's an extra two hours, whereas they can come stay here with us, and it's an hour and 20 minutes away."
There will be a variety of stalls available to peruse this Saturday from 9am-2pm, with items like cakes and slices; handmade woodwork, craft and chutneys; and much more.
Oaktree Village Residents Social Club president Anne Fittler said there was a "lovely spirit in the village of people supporting one another and supporting worthwhile causes and this is an opportunity for us to do that".
"It's also a chance to contribute our white elephants," she said.
"A lot of us have moved from a bigger house to a much smaller compact village and even though we've been here for sometime, we still find things that we're not using so we've got wonderful things like a foot massager, a light, little vacuum cleaners, coffee percolators that we don't use anymore but are still in really good condition."
Mr Sawtell said residents had already raised about $1000 for the cancer centre.
"Last year we raised just over $4000 for the R U OK? foundation. That was our first market day, and because it was such a success we thought we'd hold it every year and raise funds for others in the community," he said.
