The BoM confirmed the river level peaked at 3.66 metres at about 1:30pm on Friday before it began to fall again.
Several local roads remained closed on Friday afternoon and real-time updates can be found on Live Traffic NSW.
Update 2pm:
THE PEEL River was still rising on Friday afternoon after reaching the minor flood level, and was threatening to break the banks in places.
Water lapped at the banks at Jewry Street in Tamworth as the river level surged to 3.57m about midday on Friday.
Data from the BoM indicated the river was still rising at that point, and was expected to peak about 1pm at 3.6m in Tamworth.
Local roads remain closed including Whitehouse Lane, Burgmanns Lane, Wallamore Road and Duri-Dungowan Road.
The next flood bulletin will be released by the BoM about 3:30pm on Friday and is expected to indicate the Peel River level to be falling again at that time.
Update 10am:
THE RIVER flowing through Tamworth is expected to peak at the minor flood level at midday on Friday.
The latest warning from the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) indicates the Peel River could rise to 3.4m about 12pm today.
The flood warning has come after three days of soaking rain and heavy snow in both the Peel River and Cockburn River catchments.
The rivers meet a few kilometres upstream from Paradise Bridge in town.
"Moderate rainfall over the Peel River catchment on Wednesday and Thursday has caused significant river rises, and minor flooding developed along the Peel River at Tamworth this morning," the updated warning said.

Earlier 8:30am:
A MINOR flood warning has been issued for the Peel River in Tamworth after days of soaking rain in the catchment.
The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) has warned the Peel River could hit the minor flood level of 3m at about 11am on Friday.
"Moderate rainfall over the Peel River catchment on Wednesday and Thursday has caused significant river rises," the BoM warning said.
The intial advice was issued at 6:30am on Friday and further updates will be provided throughout the day.

Roads in the Tamworth area have been closed due to flooding on Friday morning, including Whitehouse Lane and Burgmanns Lane.
Duri-Dungowan Road remains closed due to slippery and wet conditions and Wallamore Road is still closed after flooding in March.
Other main roads in the outerlying areas remain closed due to snowy conditions, including the New England Highway between Armidale and Glen Innes, and Thunderbolts Way.
The head of the Peel River BoM gauge at Nundle has recorded more than 72mm of rain - and snow - during a wet week, with more showers yesterday.
