The top temperature for the city on Thursday was just 6.9 degrees, according to the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) weather station at Tamworth airport. The previous lowest maximum temperature for the month of June recorded at the station was 7 degrees back in 1998.
The cold snap mixed with gloomy weather made for a miserable day in Tamworth on Thursday, which also brought soaking rain.
The BoM airport station notched about 20mm of rain overnight on Wednesday and throughout Thursday.

Residents in higher parts of the Tamworth region woke to winter wonderlands yesterday, after heavy snow fell overnight and on Thursday.
But snow zones quickly became no-go zones across the Tamworth region, as the heavy falls resulted in icy and slippery conditions, closing roads and cutting off communities.
Reports of up to half-a-metre of snow in the Hanging Rock area meant roads out of Nundle were closed to would-be tourists.
Roads to Niangala and Nowendoc, including the Thunderbolts Way, were also blocked to traffic due to the snow and freezing conditions and remained closed.
One Niangala resident told the Leader about 18cm of snow had fallen at the property, leaving a thick white layer on cars and roofs and giving enough ground cover to create a magnificent snowman.
Mount Kaputar was covered in show, Guyra also saw a dusting, and Northern Tablelands towns around Walcha and Armidale were blanketed in white on Thursday.
The New England Highway was also closed for a short period on Thursday morning between Glen Innes and Glencoe.
Glen Innes was icy cold with at a maximum temperature of just 4.1 degrees, while Inverell climbed to 6.1 degrees. Gunnedah's top temperature was 7.1 degrees, Narrabri was at 7.4 degrees and Moree reached 9 degrees. It is understood those five towns could all have broken June records as well.
The weather in Tamworth is set to stay cool for the next week, with minimum temperatures expected to stay in the low single-digits and top temperatures to chill in the mid-to-late teens.
The BoM has forecast the city to remain relatively dry for at least the next couple of days.
