However, the trainer-driver wasn't always drawn to the sport.
Welsh's dad, Dwayne Brown, has "been in it all his life" but it wasn't until Welsh was a teenager that he got involved with harness racing.
"I wasn't really interested until I was 12 or 13 and I really immersed myself in it all," Welsh, who drives and trains under his full name Scotty-Jon Welsh, said.
"I just wasn't really interested. [I was into] video games and stuff. Then my brother got a mini-trotter and I was like 'I want to do that, too' and went from there."

When Welsh says he immersed himself in the sport, he means it.
Along with training and driving, the 23-year-old is also on the Tamworth Harness Racing Club board.
He first joined the board when he was still in his teens.
"I think this is my fourth year," Welsh said.
"I was the youngest person to ever be on the committee.
"There was a position open and I was just like 'I'll put my hand up and see what it is like behind the scenes' and it's been great."
One of Welsh's initiatives was the introduction of dachshund racing during the club's annual carnival in 2020 which proved to be a hit.
Welsh had good news for fans of the short-legged hounds as well.
"Hopefully with the carnival next year, we can have a bit more of a crowd and have some sausage dogs," Welsh said.
"It was good fun and everyone enjoyed themselves and wanted to come back but because of COVID we couldn't have much entertainment [in 2021] so hopefully next January we can."
On the driving side of things, Welsh recently had a fourth-month break to recharge the batteries and he's come back revived.
This season Welsh has had 48 drives for five wins at a strike rate of 10 per cent. His best strike rate for a season since he started.
Welsh will have five drives at Tamworth on Thursday. Welsh trains four of the horses himself while the other is trained by his father.
Racing at the Tamworth Paceway starts at 12.25pm with the 10th and final race to run at 5.47pm.
