The 19-year-old was taken to hospital, and later treated in Tamworth hospital for serious facial injuries.
"The male discharged himself from hospital shortly after," Oxley Detective Inspector Jason Darcy said.
The victim was robbed while he was in the reserve. Police are now investigating whether the victim might have known his attacker, and whether it was a targeted attack.
Detective Darcy made an appeal for public help from anyone that might know what happened.
"Police are making a public appeal for anyone that might have been driving past the reserve or who might have seen something on Friday night, we would urge them to contact Oxley police," he said.
Anyone with information should contact Oxley police on 6742 9099.
