Monday delivered the coldest April morning in Tamworth's history, with the mercury dropping below freezing to hit a low of -0.4 degrees about 6:30am.
The previous record for the chilliest April morning was -0.2 degrees back in 2008, right at the end of the month.
The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) meteorologist Helen Reid said data collected at Tamworth's weather station would be confirmed in the coming days but it "looked to be one for the record books".

The cold snap had locals reaching for the winter woollies earlier than expected, and marked the first time the temperature had dropped below zero degrees all year.
So far in April, the daily minimum temperature has been chilling at a more comfortable range of between nine degrees and 15 degrees.
Jack Frost swept in for his first visit of the year on Monday, though it quickly disappeared as the sun came out.
Ms Reid said another wintry morning could be on the cards on Tuesday, but the cold snap would be short and sharp and the weather should warm up soon.
"We have seen a very nice cold blast of air ... with that there were dry winds for most of NSW that were also quite cold," she said.
"By Wednesday hopefully we will be back to where we normally would be in April."
She said the cold air had come from "a long way south" and delivered an icy blast across large parts of the state.
Tamworth can expect a low of five degrees on Tuesday.
The BoM forecast shows maximum temperatures are set to stay hovering around the mid-20s, but Thursday could bring a sunny 27-degree day.
