There were concerns on Wednesday people who were door-knocking in South Tamworth were impersonating the not-for-profit organisation.
The local RSL sub-branch used social media to warn people they were not responsible, and encouraged anyone effected to call notify police.
However, it has since been discovered RSL Queensland (RSLQ) were the ones behind the donation push.
The organisation has a license to fundraise in NSW, and was trying to gain support for its Art Union campaign.
Tamworth RSL sub-branch (TRSLSB) has since cleared up the confusion and apologised to RSLQ for the misunderstanding.
TRSLSB president Jayne McCarthy stated while the Art Union push was a worthy cause, she would love people to donate their money locally.
"I've been reminding people that we have our own local campaign next week, so don't support Queensland because the money doesn't stay in Tamworth it goes to Queensland," she said.

As part of the Anzac Appeal, the branch will sell tokens and merchandise, which will go towards a good cause.
"It's a bit of a fundraiser in the lead up to Anzac Day and that money stays local and that money helps the sub-branch support local veterans," added Ms McCarthy.
Getting behind TRSLSB is extremely important this year in particular, as many of its donation activities last year were cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions.
Stalls will be set up in shopping centres around town, with Saturday April 18 being the day where most of their fundraising will take place.
