The 53-year-old's licence has been suspended and she's facing one charge of high-range drink driving.

Police allege she was drunk and behind the wheel of a Volkswagen Tiguan travelling east along White Street on the afternoon of April 1.

Officers claim the woman collided with a westbound Ford Focus at the intersection of Upper Street about 2pm.

Witnesses along with nearby highway patrol officers rushed to help both drivers.

The driver of the Ford, a 56-year-old, was assessed on scene by paramedics and taken to Tamworth hospital.

She has since undergone surgery for a fractured arm, police confirmed.

The 53-year-old Volkswagen driver failed a roadside breath test at the scene. She was arrested and taken to Tamworth Police Station where police allege she recorded a blood alcohol reading of 0.250 - five times the limit.

She was charged with one count of high-range drink driving and had her licence suspended on the spot.

She has been ordered to appear in Tamworth Local Court on May 17.
