Walcha Central's Blaine Cooney, Nundle Public's Ben Witten and Tamworth Public's Laura Hall finished the school term on a high note with finalist performances at the State PSSA Swimming Championships in Sydney.

Representing North West, Cooney made the final of the 9yrs boys 50m freestyle, Witten the 13yrs boys 50m freestyle and Hall, who was backing up from competing in six events at the Junior State Age Championships the weekend prior, the 12-13yrs girls 50m breaststroke.

All went on to finish ninth.

The 102-strong North West team performed strongly overall with a lot of swimmers slicing time off their entry times, co-manager Christine-Roser Whitney said.

"They all represented North West really well and all swam their little hearts out," Roser-Whitney said.

Gravesend Public School's Earl McGee Relay (less then 25 children enrolled in the school) team were one of the biggest improvers slashing a massive 16 seconds off their time from last month's North West carnival.

Swimmers from as far north as Tenterfield, out to Boomi and Burren Junction and down to Coolah pulled on the blue and black over two days of tough competition.
