Tamworth Regional Council (TRC) staff have started the clean-up effort by assessing roads, sporting fields and bridges after several were submerged when the Peel River burst its banks on Wednesday.
Several roads remained closed at the latest update on Thursday evening, though most main thoroughfares had reopened.

Council's manager of infrastructure and works Murray Russell said some roads would stay closed for a bit longer.
"As the flood water recedes we are carrying out inspections to ensure that everything is safe before allowing residents access," he said.
"We currently have a number of teams carrying out these inspections across the region to avoid any delays in the clean-up."
Traffic chaos ruled when all but one river crossing in Tamworth was shut off for several hours on Wednesday, causing cars to bank up bumper to bumper for kilometres trying to drive along Bridge Street.
That pressure was alleviated on Thursday when both Jewry Street and Scott Road reopened.
"Initial assessments suggest that the damage from the floodwater has not been extensive," Mr Russell said.
"We appear to have been quite lucky in comparison to some other towns across the state."
Council reminded locals it is illegal to drive around road closed signage.
At the latest update, the following Tamworth roads are still closed to traffic:
- Burgmanns Lane at Goonoo Goonoo Creek
- Davidsons Lane at Moore Creek
- Kelso's Lane
- Warral-Duri Road
- Wallamore Road
- Dungowan Dam Road
- Fishers Lane at Loomberah
Several roads were reopened on Thursday, including:
- Duri Dungowan Road at Reedy Creek
- Racecourse Road at Somerton
- Warral Road
- Appleby Lane
- Whitehouse Lane
- Wallamore Road between Evans Street and Kingsford Smith
- Warral Road
- Daruka Road at Moore Creek Road
- Kia Ora Lane
