The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) issued an initial flood warning for the river early on Thursday afternoon.
The Namoi River is expected to reach the minor flood level of 7.3m at Gunnedah later this evening.

The Namoi River at Boggabri could also reach the minor flood level of 7m on Friday.
The BoM has warned further rises are possible at both locations, after heavy rain in the catchment flows downstream and causes flooding.
A further update is expected to be issued by the BoM later this evening.
Flood safety advice from emergency services:
If you require rescue or assistance call the NSW State Emergency Service (SES) at 132 500, but in life-threatening situations, call Triple Zero (000).
- Avoid drowning - stay out of rising water, seek refuge in the highest available place
- Prevent damage to your vehicle - move it under cover, away from areas likely to flood
- Avoid being swept away - stay out of fast-flowing creeks and storm drains
- Never drive, ride or walk through flood water as flood water can be deceptive and dangerous
