State Emergency Service (SES) spokesman David Rankine confirmed Tamworth and the Peel River were not a big "concern", as widespread rain continued to fall on Tuesday afternoon.

"We have been keeping a close eye on the Peel River and it was one of the rivers that was issued with a flood watch over the course of the last day or so," Mr Rankine said.

"We're a long way from the water getting anywhere near that Christmas Eve flood point that we saw in the Peel River and given there has not been too much activity upstream, it's certainly not one we are too concerned about at the moment."

Volunteers have been on call in Tamworth to help shore up homes and properties where needed, but Mr Rankine said it had been a quiet enough day with no major rescues or flood activity in the city.

Efforts have been focused on the Moree area, with a major flood warning and an evacuation warning current.

Tamworth's Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) weather station at the airport recorded 20mm between 9am and 4:30pm on Tuesday, about the same amount that was recorded on Monday.

It brings the city's rain tally for March to a total of about 130mm, which is already more than what was dumped on Tamworth in the month of February and more than five times the amount that fell in January.

The BoM forecast for Tuesday indicated up to 100mm could have fallen in heavy showers across the day, but ominous grey skies didn't end up coming through with the deluge.

Although the Peel River isn't quite raging, the rainfall was enough to wreak havoc on local roads.

Tamworth Regional Council was preparing to possibly close Calala Lane and Whitehouse Lane at the latest update on Tuesday afternoon.

Wallamore Road, Warral Road, Warral-Duri Road, Duri-Dungowan Road, Davidsons Lane, Burgmanns Lane and Kelso's Lane all remained closed on Tuesday afternoon.

The weather is predicted to remain overcast and rainy overnight, but brighter blue skies and warmer temperatures should shine through on Wednesday, according to the BoM.
