A DATA glitch that showed about 17 days' worth of town water for Tamworth had flooded down the Peel River, when it was actually still safely shored up in Chaffey Dam, is being investigated.

Both the Water NSW website and the authority's WaterLive app recorded block water releases of 117ML and 194ML flowing out of the supply at the end of January, but that information has been confirmed to be false.
The online information has since been fixed.
A Water NSW spokesman told the Leader that water releases from Chaffey Dam have actually been hovering at just 3-4ML per day.

"The incorrect information was presented as a result of a technical aberration within the data network," the Water NSW spokesman said in a statement. "The false data does not correspond with any large releases on the days in question."
The website and the app can be accessed by the public to find information about dam levels, river levels, inflows and water releases.
The Water NSW spokesman confirmed the "root cause" of the data glitch was being investigated.
The revelation means the 311ML of water thought to have been released down the Peel River in a two-day period earlier this year is actually still floating around in Chaffey Dam.
The 311ML could supply water to Tamworth town users for about 17 days, and is the equivalent of 150 full Olympic swimming pools.
The spokesman said data captured downstream of the dam confirmed the bulk water releases shown on Water NSW sites never actually flooded out.
The 3-4ML released per day is for the environment.
Tamworth's town water is still coming from Dungowan Dam and the Peel River.
Chaffey Dam is 42.4 per cent full and Dungowan Dam is at 88 per cent.
