The push came after Tamworth Regional Council (TRC) installed a new disabled carpark on Bourke Street.

While it's a welcome addition, Cr Tickle said some people with disabilities have to walk long distances to get where they need to be.

"It's an engineering challenge, obviously the regulations in 2021 are quite different to when the streets were designed, so it presents challenges getting a gradient in certain places," she said.

"It's not just for people in wheelchairs, but someone on crutches, the elderly with walking sticks or a walker - anyone who has a mobility impairment with a parking sticker."

Bourke Street was identified as a place where more disabled parks were needed so that people with disabilities could better access the CBD

Cr Tickle wants an audit to see if more laybacks need to be put in place.

"We have done audits before, but legislative guidelines or requirements frequently change, so we need to undertake another audit just to see if we can accommodate some more parking spots with laybacks," she said.

TRC's regional traffic committee identified four new disabled parking spots after public requests on Peel Street, Dowe Avenue, Kable Avenue and Crown Street.

After the CBD Parking Strategy was adopted in 2019, a review of disabled parking in the city's CBD was done.

As a result, Peel Street, White Street, Kable Avenue and Bourke Street were identified as needing more disabled parks, which should be finished by June 2022.

The White Street carpark will also be extended to include another two disabled parking spots, which is expected to begin in mid-2021.

That extension should take about five weeks, TRC acting operations manager of infrastructure and works Angela Webb said.

"There are often challenges associated with retrofitting old infrastructure, making it difficult to comply with all current standards," she said.

"The council is always open to suggestions to further improve access for those with disabilities and restricted mobility."

The next audit of the CBD is due to take place this year in line with the CBD Parking Plan.
