The 33-year-old resident suffered a broken nose and other injuries in the attack inside the Robert Street home at about 10pm on Saturday.
Police have been told the man was inside the home when three offenders kicked in a wooden door to the property.
Police said the victim was hit in the head with a wooden guitar and one offender held him a knifepoint while they ransacked the property.
"The males have confronted the owner who was then assaulted," Oxley Detective Acting Inspector Jason Darcy said.

"The males then searched the house for property and stole a wallet and car keys."
The intruders fled and were last seen heading west along Robert Street, towards Hillvue Road.
The victim was taken to Tamworth hospital and treated for a broken nose and minor lacerations. He was released shortly after.
Police were alerted and set up a crime scene at the home. Investigators believe there were several people passing through the street between 10 and 10:30pm.
"We believe there were people around at the time of this aggravated break-and-enter and we're seeking public help from anyone with dash cam footage, or who saw three males in the Robert Street area," Detective Darcy said.
The three intruders are described as being Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander in appearance, aged between 15 to 20 years old, with their faces covered.
Police said two of the men were last seen wearing black or dark-coloured clothing, and the third was wearing and orange-coloured jacket or jumper.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Tamworth police on 6768 2999.
