A new sign has been put up to enforce the rules at the NRMA charger in the CWA carpark on Kable Avenue.
A warning sign has been installed after Tamworth Regional Council received multiple complaints, and inspectors can now fine wrong-doers.
Mayor Col Murray said there had been some confusion as to who could park where, hence the new sign.
"They've been in for some time but they hadn't been formally reported to council and to enable the rangers to levy fines for illegal parking, it must go through this formal process," Cr Murray said.
"If electric vehicles aren't charging, they're carrying out an unlawful activity and will be fined, same as any other parking infringement."
Cr Murray said he wasn't sure precisely how many people used the charger, but "numbers are very steady", and if more stations were needed, that might happen.
"Particularly it seems it's people travelling through the region, I assume most between Sydney and Brisbane," he told the Leader.
"It'll be a needs-based decision [to install in more chargers], because the charging stations are not cheap to put in.
"I'm sure we'll see more and more electric vehicles so I assume we'll see more and more electric vehicle charging stations."
