Reports have flooded in of power lost at Westdale, parts of East Tamworth to Moore Creek as well as Hillvue out to Loomberah, Goonoo Goonoo and Barraba.
Up to 20mm of rain has fallen in just 30 minutes at Manilla and trees are reportedly down at Wallamore.
Centrepoint Shopping Centre has flooded along with parts of Peel Street in the main CBD, but the road remains open as of 4:50pm.
Power lines are reportedly down at Higgins Lane at Oxley Vale.
The storm hit about 4:30pm and is expected to continue for several hours across Armidale, Tenterfield, Tamworth, Gunnedah, Moree and Narrabri.

The Bureau of Meteorology has warned the public to move their vehicles away from trees, secure loose items at home and keep at least eight metres away from fallen power lines.
People should keep clear of creeks or storm drains, avoid flood water and remain indoors where possible.
