LOCALS have been warned to be on high alert for scammers after a spike in reports to Oxley police of fraudsters trying to coax money.

Oxley police told the Leader locally, residents - particularly elderly or vulnerable community members - had been hit by scammers purporting to be from Telstra, banks and the Australian Taxation Office.
Investigators said locals should never give out their financial details over the phone, or online.
The rise in reports has included a pre-recorded message with the scam advising the victim they have an urgent bill that must be paid, or an outstanding debt, and in some cases an arrest warrant has been issued.

The fraud then warns people to urgently hand over their financial accounts, banking details or personal details.
Oxley police said locals should not give out payment details or transfer funds over the phone.
Officers are urging residents to hang up on the scam, and if they're concerned, contact the company or government department directly.
