The 26-year-old was formally refused bail by a registrar in an out-of-sessions bail hearing in Tamworth Local Court on Sunday morning.
He was not required to enter a plea to the lone charge of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
If found guilty, he faces a maximum penalty of 25 years' imprisonment.
The registrar adjourned the case to the same court on Monday where the accused will front again, this time in front of a magistrate.
The Leader has been told the victim remains in a stable condition in hospital receiving treatment for the stab wounds to his torso.
Investigations into the stabbing are continuing on Sunday.

A TAMWORTH man has been charged with wounding another after an early-morning stabbing in the centre of the city.
The 26-year-old has been refused bail, accused of knifing a 41-year-old man on Goonoo Goonoo Road in the early hours of Saturday.
The 41-year-old victim was found with stab wounds to his torso at the Coles service station, shortly before 4am.
But police are investigating whether he was attacked over the road, with a house, footpaths and the petrol station all declared crime scenes.

Emergency services were alerted and rushed to the scene to help the man at 3.45am. Paramedics delivered first aid to the injured man who was rushed to Tamworth hospital in a serious condition.
Police said he's now recovering in hospital and his condition has improved. He is listed in a stable condition.
Officers then homed in on the 26-year-old accused who was found nearby and arrested.
He's been in custody since and was questioned by Tamworth detectives on Saturday before he was charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
He was refused bail by police and remains in custody at Tamworth Police Station, and will front an out-of-sessions bail hearing in Tamworth Local Court on Sunday.
It's the police case the pair are known to one another, and it wasn't a random attack.
Forensic crews and detectives spent the day crawling the crime scenes in search of clues. Goonoo Goonoo Road was cordoned off for several hours as police trawled the area.
Neighbours were doorknocked by police looking for witnesses, and evidence was seen being collected from the crime scenes, which remained under police guard for the day.
Police said they have spoken to several witnesses but are appealing for anyone else who might have been in the Goonoo Goonoo Road area in the early hours to come forward.
