REPORTS of illegal hunting are being investigated by police, after gunshots were heard at a property north of Tamworth.

Oxley police have increased patrols in the Halls Creek area, about 50km north of Tamworth, after reports a property owner heard gunshots on Saturday evening.
Police said the owner also found a padlock securing one of the gates on his farm had been cut, when he went to check the area.

The force's rural crime prevention team confirmed Oxley police are investigating the illegal hunting and malicious damage reports, and are still trying to find any possible witnesses.
The gun shots were heard about 5pm on February 13, at the Halls Creek property.
Police confirmed patrols will be increased nearby and investigations are continuing.
