The Bureau of Health Information's latest Maternity Care Survey Results shows data from 54 public hospitals across the state, and Gunnedah has been voted second for overall care received during labour and birth.

In the survey, 97 per cent of respondents selected "very good" for overall care, the highest rating available.

That's above the state average of 76 per cent, with the only hospital rating higher being Wyong Hospital, which received a 100 per cent approval rating for overall care.

Coming in third was Inverell Hospital, with a 95 per cent approval rating.

However across the Hunter New England Health District, overall maternity care satisfaction ratings were below the state average.

Only 70 per cent of mothers who gave birth at Tamworth Hospital rated the overall experience as "very good" - the 11th lowest of the 54 hospitals included in the data.

John Hunter Hospital, which made up the largest category of respondents in the health district, also had an approval rating of 70 per cent.

Armidale Hospital was rated higher - at 76 per cent.

Western Sydney suburbs Campbelltown and Liverpool came in last at 63 per cent and 64 per cent respectively.

Data for more than 100 hospitals was collected, however results are not shown when the number of respondents for the question is fewer than 30.

All other public hospitals within the New England North West received below the 30 required responses.

The results, which were released in December 2020, are for the months of January to December 2019.

This survey is run every second year and the next release of results will be in late 2022.
