Police allege Edward Arthur Pitt, 51, and 27-year-old Andrew Swan were armed with the weapons when they confronted a 50-year-old man who went to a home on Florence Avenue in Moree about 2am on Thursday.

It's the police case the pair demanded money before robbing the victim of his phone, cigarettes and month.

Police said the man was not injured and fled, alerting officers.

New England police then moved on Swan about 7.30am, arresting him at the Florence Avenue home; while Pitt was arrested on Chester Street shortly after.

Police claim Pitt was in possession of a pickaxe which was seized for forensic testing.

Both were taken to Moree Police Station for questioning before they were charged and refused bail.

Pitt appeared in Inverell Local Court on Friday where he represented himself on charges of aggravated robbery with an offensive weapon; having custody of an offensive implement in a public place; armed with intent; and robbery with a weapon.

Swan faces aggravated robbery with an offensive weapon; and robbery with a weapon; along with two counts of aggravated enter dwelling knowing people are inside; two counts of intimidation; break-and-enter; and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Both were not required to enter pleas.

Magistrate Holly Kemp denied both bids for bail from the men, ordering police to compile the evidence against the pair before the cases return to court in mid-April.
