MP Barnaby Joyce is a whole-hearted proponent of the plan, and on Friday the NSW premier said the state government has been working with federal counterparts on the idea.

Cr Murray has said the health and safety of the local community remains a key priority as council "actively explores opportunities " to turn the International Flight Training Facility Tamworth into a quarantine hub.

"The facility at the airport ticks many boxes in regards to operating as a quarantine hub including its isolated location from the city and its extremely close proximity to incoming aircraft and travellers," he said.

"I am confident it could be managed in a way which presents a low COVID-19 risk to our community - the health and wellbeing of residents will always be our priority."

Cr Murray said with international airline cadet pilots prevented from entering Australia due to its closed borders, the International Flight Training Tamworth facility is currently without purpose.

The facilities proved their worth last year when 180 boarding students from Farrer Memorial Agricultural High School stayed there for mandatory quarantine to resume studies in person.

Negotiations are "ongoing" with both levels of government.

"The health and safety of the Tamworth region will remain a key priority for council and sit a at the forefront of any decisions made," Cr Murray said.
