Thorning moved through to the singles finals after winning the Junior Zone 3 State Playoff at the Manilla Bowling Club on Saturday.
The young gun beat Manilla Bowling Club's Tarnee Ingram 21-8 to progress to the state championships for the second time in his young career.
That previous appearance in 2019, where he made the semi-finals, has Thorning feeling at ease for the mid-year championships.
"I'm not real nervous. I've been there before in the singles and I've played alright," Thorning said.
The Gunnedah High student has simple goals for the titles - to play to the best of his ability - and isn't looking to change too much in the lead-up.
He usually plays three times a week - Thursdays and weekends - with the odd game on a Wednesday.
"I'll probably keep going the way I've been going," Thorning said.
Thorning believes his game has come a long way since 2019 with a key part being the big improver.
"Probably with my mindset," Thorning said when asked where his game had improved.
"I always used to like driving but now I've started to learn how to read the head and draw a lot more."
Nineteen juniors competed in the Zone 2 singles playoff on Saturday.
The bowlers also play pairs and fours at the three-day tournament which is set to conclude on Monday.
