Double demerit points are currently in place until midnight on Tuesday, January 26 with police putting a particular emphasis on our roads after a concerning start to the year with a series of fatalities across the state.

Double demerit points will apply for speeding, seat belt, motorcycle helmet and mobile phone offences.

Mobile Phone Detection Cameras are also being enforced and fines issued.

Drivers caught using their phones during a double demerit period will be hit with a $349 fine and 10 demerits.

Police have urged drivers in the region to be mindful of their choices and look after each other as well as pedestrians ahead of Australia Day.

"Australia Day is about mateship, comradery, and looking out for each other. We want to see that on our roads," Traffic and Highway Patrol Commander Stephen Hegarty said.

"It's been a tough 12 months for everyone and sometimes drivers can forget that in each and every vehicle is a loved one: a mate, a mother, a father, child or a sibling.

"Police will be doing everything in their power to work with the community in ensuring that motorists and their families arrive at their destination safely and enjoy this upcoming Australia Day holiday."

Minister for Police and Emergency Services David Elliott launched Operation Australia Day 2021 on Thursday.

He said while this year's Australia Day may not be like past celebrations, the community can still come together in the spirit of mateship to look after one another on the roads.

"Over the Australia Day weekend I urge people to celebrate safely - abide by the public health orders and the road rules. If you plan on having a drink - do so responsibly," Minister Elliott said.

"We want people to celebrate safely and most importantly to make it home from their events without incident. We do not want any more fatalities on our roads."
