Jess Glass, pharmacist from East Tamworth Pharmacy said special thyroid medication had been out of stock for a while now, but that was nothing out of the ordinary.

"We've been out of that for a little while now, but we are in the same boat as everyone else there," she said.

"There is always certain items that have supply issues that come and go, but then we arrange with doctors to speak about alternatives, but at the moment as a whole we are not too bad."

Three other chemists spoke to the Leader on Thursday, and all said they had no problems with the supply of medications at all.

"There are no shortages at all," one spokesperson from a Peel Street-based chemist said.

All three chemists said they had customers coming in expressing their concern that their medication would be out of stock, however they said supply fears were "unwarranted".

Some medications used to treat hyperthyroidism, such as cortisone and carbimazole, have been in short supply according to some NSW specialists.

Other medications, like some brands used to treat high blood pressure, had seen a price increase in parts of the country due to the lack of available generic brands.

With the global supply chain of medications disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, many essential medications have been in short supply in Australia, which does not produce the drugs because of cost competition with overseas manufacturers.
