Meteorologist Hugh McDowell, of the Bureau of Metereology (BoM), said more than 5000 strikes were recorded within a 30km radius of Tamworth during the storm.
Just under 250 of these hit the ground.
All of these were recorded between 11pm on Thursday night and 2am Friday morning.

But while there were lightning strikes galore, the rain was few and far between.
Mr McDowell said only 5.4mm fell at the BoM's weather gauge at Tamworth Airport, with the most rain recorded at the Duri gauge, which caught 27mm.
A possible severe thunderstorm is set to hit again on Friday night, but the meteorologist said it was likely to be "dry over the weekend then perhaps some further storms into the following week".
The Friday afternoon storm may bring with it damaging winds and large hailstones.
Temperatures are set to hit 29 degrees on Saturday, and 31 on Sunday, the BoM has forecast.
It'll stay around the 31-33 degree mark from Monday to Thursday, too.
There may be a thunderstorm on Monday afternoon - the BoM predicts a 40 per cent chance of this happening.
