Locals have been flocking to the facility, as many families try and make the most of what remains of the school holidays.

The weather forecast over the coming week is offering little relief to those who struggle with the heat, with temperatures set to hover between 29 to 34 degrees in Gunnedah.

In fact, across the region it is likely to stay at around 30 over the next seven days, meaning public pools will be in high demand throughout most of the New England.

However, some would describe that as perfect pool conditions, and that certainly seems to be the attitude of many locals at the moment.

Having only reopened to the public just over two years ago after a lengthy - and worthwhile - upgrade, kids, teenagers and adults alike are making up for lost time.

The water playground, regular playground, kiosk/cafe, 25 metre indoor heated pool complex and eight lane, 50 metre outdoor swimming pool have all been in heavy use, providing a much-needed outlet for those trying to escape the bite of the hot Australian summer sun.

Gunnedah Shire Council stated it was ecstatic with the way the public reacted to these new resources and was glad their initial enthusiasm two years ago was not just a flash in the pan.

"GSC is pleased to see both residents and visitors taking to the water and enjoying the upgraded pool facilities," it said.

"Despite the wetter, cooler weather over the holidays the pool continues to be a popular destination for summer fun."

With the mercury rising, residents will need to slip slop slap as well.
