The council hit pause on funds for a Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) after a report revealed it would not go ahead because it failed stage one of a two-stage process to secure Commonwealth support.
Instead, the council will wait to see if a fresh application for the water security CRC is successful in the next financial year, TRC water and waste director Bruce Logan said.
"Council previously considered whether they would support and fund two, one or both of the CRCs," Mr Logan said.
"One was for water security and one was called 'one basin'. Council elected to financially support the water security CRC but unfortunately that one didn't get through the first round of applications so the 'one basin' CRC approached council about whether we would transfer the money we would have spent on water security to it but the council decided it wouldn't do that."

The council decided in September to provide $10,000 annually for up to 10 years to the water security CRC if it had secured federal government funds.
At the time councillors felt the research and development aims aligned closely with Tamworth's water security issues.
Mr Logan said when the next application is put in the group needs to address why it wasn't successful the first time around.
