As work begins on a world class data centre, Phil Betts reckons he's feeling what his father felt when he saw the first airplane fly into Tamworth.

Lauding the new project as a major technological milestone not just for Tamworth but the entire region, the acting mayor said it marked the start of a new age.
"Construction of the new facility is a timely economic injection for our region," he said.
"The additional IT infrastructure will support the local community, as well as provide new opportunities for economic growth for local businesses."
The first sod was turned by Cr Betts and Leading Edge Data Centre's CEO Chris Thorpe on Tuesday.
"It's more important than ever before for our metropolitan and regional communities to be digitally connected with equivalent capabilities," Mr Thorpe said.
Schneider Electric Vice President Joe Craparotta, who are helping build and deploy the centre, said they are delighted to support a project so aligned with they're business strategy: to accelerate the digital transformation particularly in regional Australia.

"Combining the vision of Leading Edge Data Centres with our market leading Prefabricated Data Centre Infrastructure is a proud moment for us.
"The data centre will be prefabricated in Heatherbrae, NSW and commissioned on site at the Tamworth site, therefore bringing much economic activity to NSW and the regions," he said.
