Police said shots were fired at five homes in the early hours of Monday morning in Boggabilla, north of Moree, near the Queensland border.
No one was injured in the shootings which unfolded about 3.30am.
New England police suspect the shootings were a "targeted attack" and several police are at the scene, scouring the homes and roads for clues.

Homes were hit in Merriwa Street, Yeoman Street and Racecourse Road and are under police guard on Monday as forensic investigations continue.
A NSW Police Force Spokesperson said investigations were continuing and urged any witnesses to contact New England police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
