It's about being a part of a community - several communities actually - and helping that community however he can.
It's why he started playing cricket for South Tamworth when he moved to the city in 2016.
"It's about getting out into the community. A lot of people know me from the sport I'm involved in - cricket, touch football, oztag, golf. Pretty much anything I can get my hands on," Ling said.

It's also why the police officer has suited up for Tamworth in the Connolly Cup for the past few years as well.
Well, that and the fact he's been putting runs on the board.
Since landing in Tamworth, Ling has scored seven 50s and two tons spread across first, second and third grade.
"I scored a few runs and ended up jagging a spot," Ling said of his start in Connolly Cup.
He was a part of Tamworth's grand final-winning side in 2018/19 and has been helping look after the side alongside Ben Middlebrook for the past couple years.
"More hands make light work," Ling said.
It's a philosophy Ling takes into the sporting arena and one that can be passed on to the plethora of you talent that comes through the Connolly Cup side.
Players like South Tamworth youngster Max Keft-Gill.
"He scored 80 in third grade two weeks ago and then got five wickets last week in second grade," Ling said.
"I've been working with him the last couple seasons.
"This is his debut and he's worked his backside off for it."
Or someone like teenage leg-spinner Zac Craig.
"He made his first grade debut for Old Boys last season and got four wickets. He's come on in leaps and bounds," Ling said.
"He got wickets last week and the week before. I think he's played Connolly once or twice before. He's perfectly suited."
The round two Connolly clash with Quirindi on Sunday at No 1 Oval comes after Tamworth forfeited their round one game.
Ling said Adam Lole will captain the Tamworth side which was set to be announced on Friday night.
