THE wild storms that have lashed the region this week have turned deadly after a man was killed by a falling tree branch.
The 68-year-old man succumbed to his head injuries in Armidale hospital on Thursday - less than 24 hours after the freak accident.
Police have confirmed the man was driving a Ford Ranger ute along Sports Union Road in Armidale during the wild hail storm on Wednesday night.
Just after 6pm, a large tree branch fell across the road, hitting the roof and bonnet of his ute, trapping him inside. Passersby then raised the alarm.
Emergency services were activated and rushed to the accident, near the intersection of Trevenna Road, to try and free the patient.
SES, police and paramedics managed to rescue the driver. He was treated on scene for serious head injuries, an Ambulance NSW spokesperson said.
He was then rushed to Armidale hospital in a serious condition, where he died on Thursday morning, police said.
The freak accident is under investigation and police have confirmed a report will now be prepared for the coroner.
