YOU'D be forgiven for thinking it had snowed when looking at the streets of Tamworth on Wednesday afternoon, after a thunderstorm lashed the city and dumped hail stones on parts of town.
Thunder boomed, lightning flashed, hail beat down and rain poured from dark clouds, when the storm rolled over the city about 2pm.

It came about an hour after the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) issued a severe storm alert, warning of the dangerous storm cell sweeping across the region.

The official BoM gauge at Tamworth airport clocked 4mm of rain to 5pm on Wednesday, but locals took to social media with much higher backyard readings.
One Hillvue resident reported close to 40mm in the downpour, while an East Tamworth local recorded about 25mm of rain during the storm.
Westdale and South Tamworth copped the brunt of the hail, with hailstones "the size of golf balls" reported. One local even had the windscreen of her car shattered.
Roads in the region are affected by flooding, with Burgmanns Lane closed and others with water lapping at or over them.
The BoM is predicting a 70 per cent chance of showers on Thursday, with between 2mm and 4mm of rain expected to fall.
