Tamworth Regional Council will decide on Tuesday whether to let the Tamworth City BMX Club use the Regional Cycling Centre free of charge until their track is up and running again.

Asbestos was found at the track in March as part of an inspection audit of all council buildings and since then it has been closed to all members of the community.

A consultant discovered what was thought to be asbestos, so a fragment was tested at a lab and confirmed to be non-friable asbestos.

Further tests of the site revealed asbestos was within the imported fill brought to the site as part of the construction in the 1990's.

The BMX track was closed immediately until the contamination can be removed to a compliant standard.

The club regularly trains in the summer months and with no BMX track, the club had nowhere else to run training or trials.

TRC sport and recreation staff have worked with the club, which has agreed the velodrome would allow riders to carry out training and sprinting activities.

Without being able to run club nights which generate venue, the club has asked the council to waive fees for exclusive use of the velodrome two nights a week when it's not being used by the Tamworth Cycle Club.

The clubs have agreed to work together and a report to the council recommends it waive hire fees and charges for the cycling centre until the council fixes the asbestos contamination problem at the track on Marius Street.

The costs will be absorbed into the sports and recreation division budget.
