NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) has scheduled a burnoff in the Arakoola Nature Reserve, south east of Coolatai.

The hazard reduction burn will take place on Thursday and could cause smoky conditions in nearby communities.

Arakoola Nature Reserve is more than 3180 hectares in size, and the burn will affect about 160 hectares in the north west corner of the reserve.

A statement from the NPWS said the burn is necessary, and is being undertaken to reduce potential fuel loads during a wildfire event and to maintain a "healthy" landscape for native plants and wildlife.

All NPWS hazard reduction burns taking place across the state are coordinated with the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS).

The two organisations work together to assess the impact of the burns on communities.
