The man, who cannot be named after a suppression order was put on his name in court, had to post $20,000 in surety to secure his release on bail.
The man was charged by police late last week and is one of the first arrests of the new dedicated child protection officers assigned to Oxley police.
He was refused bail by police and fronted Tamworth Local Court on charges of possessing child abuse material, and possessing or controlling child abuse material using a carriage service.

He was not required to enter pleas and the charges have been referred to the DPP to see whether it will elect to prosecute the matters.
The man lodged a bid for bail which was granted by magistrate Julie Soars with a raft of strict conditions.
He is banned from accessing the internet "through any means or using a computer or iPad or any other device to do so", court documents state.
He's also prohibited from using a phone which can access the internet; and must not be in the company of anyone under 16 years' of age.
As part of his bail, the accused must report to police everyday; surrender his passport to officers and not apply for another one; and must not approach any international airport.
He was bailed to live at a Tamworth address with his brother, and is not allowed to leave the home unless in the company of him. Ms Soars also imposed a surety of $20,000.
He will return to court later this month.
