Oxley police said the man was riding his bike at the skate park just before 7pm when he fell off and hit his head while riding down a ramp at the popular skating bowl.
The young man was airlifted to the Newcastle hospital after the horror accident on Friday night, where he is still being treated.
Police have confirmed he was not wearing a helmet at the time.
A GoFundMe page has been set up by friends to help support the young man and his family, who face a long road to recovery from his injuries.
The fundraiser had already notched more than $2000 in donations by Wednesday afternoon.
"We are praying that this will be a speedy recovery ... with no complications, he still has a long way to go so we are hoping to raise some money to help his family with the associated medical costs as well as costs for rehabilitation, travel and accommodation," the GoFundMe page said.
