AN ELDERLY woman has been airlifted to hospital suffering serious injuries after she was involved in a car crash on the Gwydir Highway on Friday afternoon.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter and two paramedic crews responded to reports of a single-vehicle car crash near Glen Innes at about 12:30pm.
Authorities said the car had crashed into a tree about 60km east of Glen Innes on the Gwydir Highway.

The 73-year-old woman driving the car was the only person involved in the crash and is understood to have suffered significant injuries, after she lost control and slammed into a tree.
The helicopter's critical care team and paramedics treated the woman at the scene for a leg injury, a pelvic injury and a chest injury.
She was airlifted to a Gold Coast hospital by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter in a serious condition for further treatment.
Live Traffic NSW indicates there are no interruptions caused by the accident for traffic travelling that stretch of the Gwydir Highway.
