Formerly trained by Peter Shepherdson at Narrabri, Kid Montana produced his best career mile rate to date of 1min 51.4sec for 1660 metres.

"We mainly sent him to Queensland so he could race more often," said Shepherdson, who races Kid Montana along with his brother Garry and nephew Chris Shepherdson, as well as fellow Narrabri locals Nathan Dicks, Neil Drysdale and Charles Dicks.
Weidemann had the perfect run during the race, when after commencing from the eight barrier, she soon found a slot in the outside running line for Kid Montana and took a trail behind Bathurst pacer Holy Camp Clive (Anthony Frisby).
While Holy Camp Clive took the lead, Kid Montana raced out in the breeze.
"I am over the moon with the win, fantastic," Shepherdson said. "I still get goose bumps every time I watch the race replay - and that is about 20 times.
"I thought Lola was a miracle driver when she got out into the breeze and then Frisby got the lead but he [Kid Montana] just went on from there."
Lola Weidemann let Kid Montana slide from the 400m mark, to come away for a seven metre win over Maywyns Best (Pete McMullen), with Jumping Jolt (Matt Elkins) 3.6 metres away in third place.
"Lola said he was one of the quickest horses she has driven," Shepherdson said.
He added: "The other reason we sent Kid Montana to Queensland was we knew he has got a bit more depth in him so thought why not give him his chance.
"He improved by two seconds on his own personal best time with that mile rate."
As the current Horse of the Year at Tamworth, Kid Montana is currently equal leader, with Quietly Spoken, on the Albion Park Horse of the Year Premiership.
"That is pretty exciting to hear that when you have been in the game for as long as I have," Shepherdson said.
The winning drive was extra significant for Weidemann: she surpassed 3000 winners in her career and has won the most races of any women driver in Queensland, and is second in Australia behind Kerryn Manning.
Kid Montana will be stepping up in class on Saturday night in the running of the $25,000 Mr Feelgood Open (Listed) Pace at Albion Park, and has drawn the 12 barrier.
