Two NSW Fire and Rescue crews from Tamworth and one from the West Tamworth station were called to the home in Oxley Vale at about 1:45am.

When the first crew arrived ten minutes after the call-out, local police were already on the scene and it is understood all of the occupants of the house had evacuated safely.

Firefighters worked to control the blaze which had broken out in a garage connected to the house and spread into the home.

It is understood about 25 per cent of the home was damaged by fire and the rest of the house was affected by smoke and heat from the flames and water from the firefighting effort.

Fire and Rescue NSW Tamworth station commander Glenn Willsallen said the fire caused moderate damage to the home, the garage and two cars.

"They had the fire under control within 15 minutes, which is an outstanding effort," he said.

"The crew that were on did an outstanding job to get there and save the majority of the house."

A search and rescue operation was also carried out to ensure no one was left inside the house.

An initial fire investigation was carried out but the Leader understands the scene was handed over to Tamworth police about 3:30am on Wednesday, after crews had finished mopping up.

Fire and Rescue NSW Tamworth and police will continue investigations today.
