The offenders also turned on the other occupants inside, a 20-year-old man and a 25-year-old man, before ransacking the house.
The offenders then fled the property in a ute, and police were alerted.
Ambulance paramedics were called to treat the men. The 49-year-old was taken to Quirindi hospital before he was transferred to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle, where he remains.
Police have been told he suffered a fractured eye-socket in the attack.
Paramedics assessed the other two men at the scene but they did not require hospital treatment.
